Iai presents the circumstance that when wearing the Japanese sword; one draws it in response to a sudden attack and while parrying the opponent’s offense, adds his own lethal blow. It is a martial arts technique to stop the opponent’s sword and prevail over him. The art of Iai not only trains one in the various technical sword skills but also in self-discipline and cultivates one’s character.

It is assumed there is an enemy in practice. Because it is technique of the Japanese sword, precaution is necessary but there is never damage through careful attention to each other.

1. Iaido is a tecniqe with virtual enemy where Kendo practices with real opponent.
